TMJ / TMD
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Treatment
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint that connects the jaw to the skull on each side of the face. In short, the TMJ controls the jawbone and allows it to chew as well as to open and close the mouth. Sometimes called myofacial pain, TMJ disorders (TMD) cause a host of painful problems: aching pain around the ears, a locked jaw that cannot open easily, popping noises when you chew, chronic neck pain, and debilitating headaches.
Evanston dentist Dr. Dino Mantis offers TMJ therapy at his North Shore area practice to help those suffering from these symptoms. He carefully evaluates each patient’s unique case before choosing from the surgical or non-surgical treatment options available. For example, a splint called a neuromuscular orthosis may be recommended. Other options include laser therapy, braces, massage therapy, or restorative dentistry.
The causes of TMD range from stress, whiplash, missing teeth, braces, and teeth grinding (bruxism). Anything that disrupts the coordinated efforts of the teeth, chewing muscles and the temporomandibular joint leads to a painful condition in need of treatment. TMJ problems are more common in women than men and are especially prevalent in people who are in their thirties and forties. Surprisingly, almost thirty percent of Americans suffer from TMD.
If you have reason to believe you’re among that percentage with TMD, take the first step to permanent TMJ pain relief. Call our Wilmette, Illinois office today on Chicago’s North Shore and let Dr. Mantis help restore your temporomandibular joint to proper, pain-free function.
