For Dr. Dino Mantis, DDS, and his team, offering dental care is far more than a job. It is a mission to improve the health of as many individuals and families in our area as we can. We love what we do so we are constantly advancing our skill and technique to keep up with the developments in dentistry. This means that with every visit to our office, we can provide you with the very best care for your dental and oral health.
We also know the value of preventing problems so we offer a variety of preventative dentistry services that keep major problems from ever developing. Did you know that problems in your teeth or mouth can affect your overall health? Infections in teeth or gums can introduce bacteria to other parts of the body. Increased rates of heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and arthritis have been associated with gum disease, along with early labor and a low birth-weight baby.
We also want to get to know you and your goals for your dental health, and educate you on the many ways we can help. Keep reading to learn all the services we offer to help you and your family keep your teeth healthy and strong. We provide family and general dentistry services to patients in Wilmette, Evanston, and Chicago’s North Shore neighborhoods.
Professional Teeth Cleanings
Regular visits to our Wilmette dentist’s office for professional teeth cleanings is the cornerstone of preserving your dental health. The plaque that will attack your enamel if it’s not scrubbed off needs to be removed from every corner of your teeth, especially those areas you can’t reach at home. We will also help you learn the best way to keep your teeth healthy with at-home care and answer any questions you might have.
Digital X-rays
Our digital x-rays are better than film x-rays in so many ways. You don’t have to wait for the results; you can see your own x-rays on a screen in the treatment room almost immediately. Dr. Mantis can enlarge the images so he can accurately diagnose any problems that might be present and the dosage of radiation is minimal, much less than for film x-rays. Because we want the best for you, we want the best x-ray imaging system.
Dental Examinations
When you come in for preventative care, we have a chance to examine your face, mouth and teeth for any developing problems. With your children, we will be looking for any alignment or spacing problems as the permanent teeth come in. With every patient, we will look for any gum infection or cavities that might be developing. Using the DIAGNOdent device permits us to locate developing cavities that can’t even be seen with the eye or x-ray so we can treat them promptly. We will even test your saliva as another diagnostic tool. Working together, we can catch problems while they are in their earliest stages.
TMJ/TMD Treatment
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint located where your lower jaw hooks into your skull near each ear. Problems referred to as temporomandibular disorders (TMD) can result in facial, ear, neck or shoulder pain, headaches, inability to fully open or close the mouth, ringing in the ears and other problems. Patients may hear a clicking or popping noise when they eat, talk or move their jaws. Dr. Mantis can help you by diagnosing this problem and providing a variety of different treatments that involve repositioning the lower jaw for better alignment and comfort.
Dental Sealants
Especially during the most cavity-prone years for our young patients, we may recommend sealants as an effective method of reducing cavities. Dental sealants are used to coat the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, preventing food acids and bacteria from settling on them. Studies have shown that youth with sealants experience far fewer cavities that youth who do not get them.
Dental Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a mineral that is associated with a lower incidence of cavities. We may recommend fluoride applications to the teeth of your child as way of protecting teeth during the most cavity-prone years.
Bruxism Treatment
Bruxism is the name for grinding, gnashing or clenching your teeth, mostly during sleep, but it can also occur while a person is awake. When this habit continues for years, the teeth become worn and can even chip, crack or break. The gums and structures supporting the teeth can also suffer harm. If bruxism goes on for a long time, a person’s smile can suffer considerable damage. We can help you both with the problem and the damage that results. A night guard that positions your jaw correctly and prevents the teeth from meeting eliminates further wear on the teeth. With cosmetic dentistry, we can restore the beauty of a smile that has been damaged by bruxism.
Gum Disease Therapy
Maintaining healthy gums is an essential part of preserving your teeth for your whole life. Signs like bleeding during brushing or flossing or swollen, painful areas are signs that gum disease exists. The early stage is called gingivitis which refers to an inflammation of the gingiva (another name for your gums). The later, more serious stage of gum disease is called periodontitis, and it may be accompanied by persistent bad breath, areas of pus discharge and more seriously inflamed and puffy gums. It’s essential that gum disease be treated as soon as it appears. Treatment includes scaling and root planing. This starts with a deep cleaning under the gums, a procedure called scaling. Next, root planing will smooth any irregularities on the surface of the roots to prevent bacteria from lodging there and creating further infection. We will then recheck your gums in a month to ensure that there is no further gum disease present and that no pockets remain between teeth and gums.
Every time we see you, we will screen you for any signs of mouth cancer. We will check your face, neck, tongue and mouth for any hard or white spots or sores that might need further diagnosis. We will also make recommendations on how you can reduce your risk of oral cancer.
Sleep Apnea Treatment
The problems associated with sleep apnea go a lot further than just the noise of a person snoring. A person with sleep apnea does not have good quality sleep and so can be groggy and tired all day. Apnea also contributes to serious health conditions including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and headaches. If you suffer from sleep apnea, Dr. Mantis, DDS, can help you with an appliance to keep your airway open and enable you to breathe normally during sleep.
